We had the unexpected honour this month to be awarded the 2014 Business of the Year award from the Revelstoke Chamber of Commerce. Among 18 nominees, we were chosen to have “demonstrated all around excellence through innovation, sustainable development, customer service, risk taking and community support.” I was shaking a little as I listened to the preamble before we “knew”, but I remember hearing talk of our work on social media and in the community (we’re striving to be a store-front for the North Columbia Environmental Society). The give away hint that really gave me the shakes was when they spoke of taking a business from the previous (female) owner and putting a twist on it. Deenie Ottenbreit, my mentor/boss/supporter, started this great business back in 2003 and has been a huge part of this town’s business community. I hope to continue that tradition and make her proud!
It’s exciting to be a part of the growing retail environment here in Revelstoke. With so many young owners pushing boundaries of what is expected, our community is turning into a destination for more than just outdoor adventure. If you want to buy tools and equipment for a mountain lifestyle, you go to where that lifestyle is lived and ask the people who are living it.
Thanks again to the Chamber, what a boost going into our first fall/winter season as Big Mountain Kitchen & Linen! Congratulations to all the recipients, it’s an honour to be counted among you 🙂
